The World’s Tallest Hotels
The United States was once synonymous with having the largest incarnation of just about anything you could think of – whether it was the world’s largest ball of string or the tallest free-standing structure on the planet. However, out of the top ten current tallest buildings in the world, Uncle Sam has only two structures, neither of which sits in the top slot. That honour is held by Taiwan, whose Taipei 101 structure measures a lofty 509m in height, almost 70m taller than Chicago’s Sears Tower, the United States’ tallest building.
While Taiwan can claim to have the world’s largest industrial building, Dubai can lay claim to having the world’s tallest hotel. In fact, Dubai is home to three out of the top ten world’s tallest hotels with the Rose Tower – despite still being under construction – the tallest at a height of 333 metres. When construction began, the Rose Tower was supposed to reach 380 metres – the height of the Empire State Building. However, design modifications led to its projected height being reduced, and while it is still under construction, the honour of tallest hotel is unofficial.
Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea is home to what would have been the second tallest hotel, the Ryugyong Hotel. With 105 stories rising to a height of 330 metres, the Ryugong Hotel is a towering, empty concrete shell, which has stood unfinished since 1992. With no windows, fixtures or fittings ever being installed, the basic structure is complete but has never been surveyed for safety and some believe the structure to be unsafe due to the use of poor quality building materials.
As a result, travellers looking to stay in the world’s tallest operable hotels should head back to Dubai, where they’ll be able to stay in the third and fourth tallest hotel structures in the world: the Burj-al-Arab and the Jumeirah Emirates Towers. The Burj-al-Arab has 60 guest floors, stands at 321 metres tall and is constructed on an artificial island that is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. Construction of the Burj-al-Arab began in 1994 and was built to resemble the sail of a dhow – a type of Arabian sea vessel.
The Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel is a 56-floor five-star business hotel in Dubai which stands at a height of 309 metres and is the 29th tallest currently-standing structure in the world. The Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel is also referred to as Emirates Tower Two and is connected to the 54-floor Emirates Office Tower by a retail boulevard and together the two structures form the Emirates Towers complex, which is complete with lakes, waterfalls, public seating areas and has ample car parking space for up to 1800 cars.
Although renowned for its sand, sun, and shopping, Dubai is fast becoming world famous for its architectural audacity and breathtaking structures. Today, shiny new skyscrapers reflect the mosques and wind towers of Old Dubai while some of the world’s tallest structures – hospitality and industry alike – dominate the Dubai skyline.

United Arab Emirates bail out Citigroup with $7.5 billion
December 29, 2009 by admin
One can of course look at this bailout by the United Arab Emirates in xenophobic terms. We can moan about the way American financial institutions are being bought over by foreigners. But having so whole heartedly embraced the capitalist system, Americans cannot have the cake and eat it too. Financial clout knows no artificial boundaries. It will flow over national boundaries and geographical obstacles and take control over assets if the custodians of the banks or ports or whatever don’t do their job well. That is what capitalism is all about. Americans chose the system and all the ills that go with it because the going was good till the hens came home to roost.
Americans had to have two cars in a family and even with all the brouhaha about fuel consumption,SUVs are the most advertised and wanted vehicles on the road. Like drug addicts,we had to get the fuel at any cost and so we boosted the income of the oil producing nations, just like the drug barons have been drowning in an avalanche of dollars provided by the drug addicts of our country. So who is to blame? We provided the buying power to the Arabs in the first place and then to cry about their financial clout is ludicrous.
We made our economy into a service economy – providing pizzas became more important than running efficient industries. Oh let the Chinese and the Indians do the hard work – we need our pizza parlors became the watch word. And as to industries, the only thing we thought important was to invest in arms development and for that even we put up pavilions in the Dubai Air show to make the Arabs buy our killing machines. A country which so single mindedly took the wrong turns in its financial and economic planning cannot now cry over what is happening. And right around the corner is the specter we should all be fearful about – the day the oil producers start selling their oil in Euros or a basket of currencies. Then these bail outs happening now would look like kindergarten stuff.

Luxury Holidays to Dubai – Desert Adventures!
When most people think of taking a luxury holiday to Dubai, they think of Dubai city itself; staying at the breathtaking Burj Al Arab (the premier luxury hotel in Dubai), viewing the crazy building projects like the Palm Islands, shopping in the prestigious Wafi Mall or haggling for jewellery in the world famous Gold Souk. But there is much more to do on a luxury holiday to Dubai than just sightseeing in the city – there’s plenty of fun to be had out in the desert as well.
While it’s unlikely that you’ll be staying in the desert for any length of time during a luxury holiday to Dubai, it is the perfect place to stay for a night or two, or visit as a day trip. As well as being a visually striking and fascinating place to explore, it’ll also give you the chance to take part in some unique holiday activities…
Camel riding
Camel rides are an essential part of any visit to the desert, and will give you the chance to do your best Lawrence of Arabia impression as you trot across the sand dunes. There are plenty of Dubai holiday companies that run camel riding trips in the desert, ranging from half hour tasters to day long treks. They’ll be able to run you through the basics of camel handling, but here’s my top tip: when a camel stands up, it first raises its back legs, then its front legs. This means you need to lean back first then forwards as the camel stands up, or you could be sent flying!
Dune Bashing
If you take a trip to the desert during your luxury holiday to Dubai you’ll inevitably go dune bashing, a favourite activity for travellers with stomachs that are strong enough to take it! The premise of dune bashing is simple: get into a 4×4, go to the desert, and start driving over the towering sand dunes. Tearing across, up and down these sand dunes is tremendous fun; and with the absence of roads, it is pretty much the only way to get anywhere in the desert! It is also very safe – although it looks haphazard, any good tour company will employ good drivers and robust vehicles.
Sand Skiing
Yet another weird and wonderful activity to take part in while on holiday in Dubai, sand skiing is exactly what it sounds like. Out in the desert, many of the sand dunes have sand that is smooth enough to travel down on “snowboards”. It is tremendous fun, and falling over into warm sand is much less painful than taking a tumble into ice, snow and rock!
Desert BBQ
If you’d like to spend a night out in the desert as part of a luxury holiday to Dubai, one option is overnight camping, Bedouin style. It may not have all the mod cons of a Dubai luxury hotel, but you’ll be treated to Arabic cuisine, entertained by traditional music and belly dancing, then get to sleep beneath the stars in the desert – a truly unforgettable experience.
Curlin Will Participate in the Dubai Cup
One of American’s finest thoroughbreds – Curlin – last year’s Breeder’s Cup winner will make his first start of 2008 in the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse Dubai Cup on March 29th, stated his majority owner Jess Jackson.
“We feel the best thing to do for Curlin is to take him to Dubai and point him to the (Dubai) World Cup,” Jackson said during a February 3rd release. “We weighed the pros and cons of taking him overseas or kicking off 2008 in the United States. So as long as he’s fit and healthy, it comes down to the fact that Curlin has earned the chance to compete in the Dubai World Cup and has the opportunity to continue making history as an international championâ€.
Curlin has been trained by Steve Asmussen; and it finished his three year old season with earnings of $5.102.800 from a record of 6-1-2 from nine starts. Asmussen said that the idea is to put Curlin to compete in a race for $175,000 for 2,000 meters, which is the same distance as in the World Cup. Hopefully this will prepare him for the big race. “I love the month between (the prep and the World Cup), the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Asmussen said. “The quarantine stuff will be out of the way, and he will have a month to get ready.
The horse likes to know where he’s at. The second time he ran at Belmont was better than the first; the second time he ran at Monmouth was better than the first. And I believe if it’s in black and white like that, it’s true.”The plan is to have everything ready and to arrive in Dubai on February the 16th. Trainer Asmussen also wants Curlin to have another workout at Fair Grounds. The plans for the colt after the World Cup will not be di closed until after the trip.
“I deeply care about improving the state of thoroughbred racing as well as the horse industry in general,” Jackson said. “We, as the owners of Curlin, are trying to do our part to help. Fellow owners and I have joined others in the industry in a broad-based nationwide effort to elevate the industry in a variety of ways, and this campaign is one of the more visible.”
Muslim Women are Taking Part in Aqua-aerobic and Swimming Events
All these year’s Muslim females have faced the problem of finding an appropriate swimwear which adheres to the Koran, which requires a woman to cover everything except her face, hands and feet.
The swimwears available in the market were either not targeted for the Muslim women as they led to show of skin or were unpractical for swimming. To aptly describe how uncomfortable the swimwear designed for Muslimahs was I shall quote Aheda Zanetti who wrote to the National Geographic News stating “As an active Muslim girl, I found it difficult to participate in most sports, because of all the excess clothes we were wearing. And the veil very unpractical when playing sports”.
For a market that was not targeted by big market share holders like Nike scattering small companies took the initiative of designing something fruitful for Muslimahs. People like Zanetti, Oliver Momeni and Hasema saw a great potential and design need in the market of swimwear for Muslimahs. Zanetti, is the owner of Ahiida, an Australian company that designs women’s sportswear. Oliver Momeni started his venture of Bodykini in 2007, based in Spain and Hasema a Turkish company started designing a line of swimwear for men, women and kids. Among all these products the most admired and reviewed is “Bodykini”.
Surely, Oliver had the support and opinions of his Iranian family members and an experience of over 20 years in the family textile business. Before designing the final product “Bodykini”, Oliver conducted a lot of market research and held talks with many Muslim women. In the course of his time, he learned the important attributes targeted while designing the swimsuit. He designed Bodykini which is a complete blend of a swimsuit that looks great, designed for modest comfort, adheres to Islam’s tradition and most importantly lets women swim without any fear.
It does so by removing all the excess fabric that the previous swimwear provided like the veil, pants and skirts. Oliver incorporated every thing into 2 main piece of clothing: a shirt with a hijood that serves as a close-fitting headpiece, which firmly lays on the head without slipping and a pant. The fabric used is a high quality water-repellent fabric that is not only highly Chlorine resistant but also provides protection from ultraviolet rays. The advantage of using a Polyester material is that it has low water absorbency, dries fast and ensures complete stretch in all directions leading to comfortable swimming or aqua-sport.
The Bodykini comes in two colors to choose from and two unique features. The first feature is the two elastic bands that are attached at the inside of the pants that get buttoned to the inside of the suit, which prevent the suit from floating in case the swimmer performs a feet first dive. The second feature is the small pocket with a zipper in the pants; ideal for keeping small items like keys or money.
So now, with products like Bodykini both the problems namely: meeting the Islamic traditional requirements and availability of a comfortable swimming garment for women, are solved. Bodykini is available online at bodykini.com. Along with this Bodykini has been launched in the Middle East and is available in Dubai at Al Boom Marine retail stores or at the Dubai Ladies Club.
Now, Islamic women can remain more active and enjoy the aqua sports with the power of Bodykini. The Bodykini modest swimwear is becoming popular among not just the Muslim population but also among all those women who love to cover their bodies and prevent the tans while enjoying the relaxing water.
Having said all this, Oliver Momeni is not just being thanked by all Muslim women for introducing such a wonderful product in the market but the big players are looking forward to promote products like Bodykini which is showing a very good grip on the swimwear market. Taylor, of Azizah Magazine, says that
“In another 15 years there’s going to be a sizable Muslim consumer market and lots of demand”.
I think we’re where the Hispanic market was 20 years ago, and today the Hispanic market is a big consumer market.” Further more, Arun Jain, a marketing professor at the University of Buffalo in New York State, agrees and states that given the growth potential of the Muslim community in the United States, major sportswear manufacturers could be missing out on an opportunity to break into an emerging market. Moreover, more than just the Muslim women the modern world women comprising of Christian, Jews and others don’t feel the need to show off their bodies and strive to be modest.
