Curlin Will Participate in the Dubai Cup

December 28, 2009 by admin

One of American’s finest thoroughbreds – Curlin – last year’s Breeder’s Cup winner will make his first start of 2008 in the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse Dubai Cup on March 29th, stated his majority owner Jess Jackson.

“We feel the best thing to do for Curlin is to take him to Dubai and point him to the (Dubai) World Cup,” Jackson said during a February 3rd release. “We weighed the pros and cons of taking him overseas or kicking off 2008 in the United States. So as long as he’s fit and healthy, it comes down to the fact that Curlin has earned the chance to compete in the Dubai World Cup and has the opportunity to continue making history as an international champion”.

Curlin has been trained by Steve Asmussen; and it finished his three year old season with earnings of $5.102.800 from a record of 6-1-2 from nine starts. Asmussen said that the idea is to put Curlin to compete in a race for $175,000 for 2,000 meters, which is the same distance as in the World Cup. Hopefully this will prepare him for the big race. “I love the month between (the prep and the World Cup), the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Asmussen said. “The quarantine stuff will be out of the way, and he will have a month to get ready.

The horse likes to know where he’s at. The second time he ran at Belmont was better than the first; the second time he ran at Monmouth was better than the first. And I believe if it’s in black and white like that, it’s true.”The plan is to have everything ready and to arrive in Dubai on February the 16th. Trainer Asmussen also wants Curlin to have another workout at Fair Grounds. The plans for the colt after the World Cup will not be di closed until after the trip.

“I deeply care about improving the state of thoroughbred racing as well as the horse industry in general,” Jackson said. “We, as the owners of Curlin, are trying to do our part to help. Fellow owners and I have joined others in the industry in a broad-based nationwide effort to elevate the industry in a variety of ways, and this campaign is one of the more visible.”

Muslim Women are Taking Part in Aqua-aerobic and Swimming Events

December 28, 2009 by admin

All these year’s Muslim females have faced the problem of finding an appropriate swimwear which adheres to the Koran, which requires a woman to cover everything except her face, hands and feet.

The swimwears available in the market were either not targeted for the Muslim women as they led to show of skin or were unpractical for swimming. To aptly describe how uncomfortable the swimwear designed for Muslimahs was I shall quote Aheda Zanetti who wrote to the National Geographic News stating “As an active Muslim girl, I found it difficult to participate in most sports, because of all the excess clothes we were wearing. And the veil very unpractical when playing sports”.

For a market that was not targeted by big market share holders like Nike scattering small companies took the initiative of designing something fruitful for Muslimahs. People like Zanetti, Oliver Momeni and Hasema saw a great potential and design need in the market of swimwear for Muslimahs. Zanetti, is the owner of Ahiida, an Australian company that designs women’s sportswear. Oliver Momeni started his venture of Bodykini in 2007, based in Spain and Hasema a Turkish company started designing a line of swimwear for men, women and kids. Among all these products the most admired and reviewed is “Bodykini”.

Surely, Oliver had the support and opinions of his Iranian family members and an experience of over 20 years in the family textile business. Before designing the final product “Bodykini”, Oliver conducted a lot of market research and held talks with many Muslim women. In the course of his time, he learned the important attributes targeted while designing the swimsuit. He designed Bodykini which is a complete blend of a swimsuit that looks great, designed for modest comfort, adheres to Islam’s tradition and most importantly lets women swim without any fear.

It does so by removing all the excess fabric that the previous swimwear provided like the veil, pants and skirts. Oliver incorporated every thing into 2 main piece of clothing: a shirt with a hijood that serves as a close-fitting headpiece, which firmly lays on the head without slipping and a pant. The fabric used is a high quality water-repellent fabric that is not only highly Chlorine resistant but also provides protection from ultraviolet rays. The advantage of using a Polyester material is that it has low water absorbency, dries fast and ensures complete stretch in all directions leading to comfortable swimming or aqua-sport.

The Bodykini comes in two colors to choose from and two unique features. The first feature is the two elastic bands that are attached at the inside of the pants that get buttoned to the inside of the suit, which prevent the suit from floating in case the swimmer performs a feet first dive. The second feature is the small pocket with a zipper in the pants; ideal for keeping small items like keys or money.

So now, with products like Bodykini both the problems namely: meeting the Islamic traditional requirements and availability of a comfortable swimming garment for women, are solved. Bodykini is available online at bodykini.com. Along with this Bodykini has been launched in the Middle East and is available in Dubai at Al Boom Marine retail stores or at the Dubai Ladies Club.

Now, Islamic women can remain more active and enjoy the aqua sports with the power of Bodykini. The Bodykini modest swimwear is becoming popular among not just the Muslim population but also among all those women who love to cover their bodies and prevent the tans while enjoying the relaxing water.

Having said all this, Oliver Momeni is not just being thanked by all Muslim women for introducing such a wonderful product in the market but the big players are looking forward to promote products like Bodykini which is showing a very good grip on the swimwear market. Taylor, of Azizah Magazine, says that

“In another 15 years there’s going to be a sizable Muslim consumer market and lots of demand”.

I think we’re where the Hispanic market was 20 years ago, and today the Hispanic market is a big consumer market.” Further more, Arun Jain, a marketing professor at the University of Buffalo in New York State, agrees and states that given the growth potential of the Muslim community in the United States, major sportswear manufacturers could be missing out on an opportunity to break into an emerging market. Moreover, more than just the Muslim women the modern world women comprising of Christian, Jews and others don’t feel the need to show off their bodies and strive to be modest.

Uae Area Guide, Part 3 Of 8 – Ajman

December 28, 2009 by admin

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (or UAE). Ajman is undergoing dramatic growth and development like the rest of the United Arab Emirates so tourist attractions and activities as well as shopping, cultural and sporting opportunities are going to dramatically increase in the very near future. Currently there are three main tourist attractions in Ajman and this article will explore these further.

Shopping in Ajman is available in both modern malls, which offer many of the designer and luxury items you would expect from a modern shopping mall in the UAE, and the traditional souqs where local products such as traditional pottery can be purchased.

Tourists to Ajman have always enjoyed a visit to the Dhow Yard which is the biggest and one of the busiest Dhow building yards in the United Arab Emirates. Here visitors can see Dhows being built in the traditional manner, exactly the same as they have been built for centuries. The Dhow Yard also builds modern speed boats that compete in the Dubai Speed Boat races.

The Ajman Museum is also well worth a visit. This museum was opened in 1981and is housed in a fort that dates from the 16th Century. The museum has a strong emphasis on the traditional culture of the region and visitors cannot only see ancient artefacts but also modern reconstructions of traditional Bedouin ways of life including both social and trade reconstructions. The Ajman museum also houses a large collection of artefacts from the Mowaihat archaeological site.

The Mowaihat Archaeological site was discovered by workers laying a sewerage pipe in 1986. The site was then excavated as an archaeological site at which several copper implements numerous beads, a number of ceramic vessels and human remains among other artefacts have been unearthed. This site was the first site to be discovered that showed that the area was occupied in the Um al-Nar period.

Ajman’s beaches have also long been a traditional tourist attraction, the climate of Ajman being superbly suited to beach life. Dolphins are common off the coast of Ajman and dolphin spotting is a popular recreational activity with both tourists and locals alike.

Ajman has a variety of food and places to eat out, you will find everything from western fast food outlets to high class restaurants and traditional café and street vendors. Even though Ajman is a Muslim state, alcohol can be purchased in restaurants and hotels. This is the norm through most of the UAE; alcohol can be purchased by non Muslims in hotels and restaurants although it is generally not possible to purchase alcohol outside of these places.

Ajman is currently experiencing a huge growth in development so over the next few years tourism and tourist attractions will grow in number and variety. There are several theme parks and other tourist related developments currently under construction or well into the planning stages. Sports facilities, clubs and venues are also currently under development as are cultural attractions such as theatres, museums and galleries.

Assessing Lucas Neills transfer to West Ham United

December 25, 2009 by admin

Thanks to the 2006 World Cup, Lucas Neill became a household name due to the cultured performances he put in for the Australian team. Such defensive displays led to a host of clubs across Europe being linked with signing the then Blackburn Rovers defender. Barcelona were rumored to be heading the race to sign Neill, but no firm offer ever materialized.

Liverpool were the next big team to express an interest and it became clear soon after that it was more than mere paper talk. Lucas Neill spoke to Liverpool and seemed destined to sign for them. West Ham United expressed a late interest in taking him to London in an effort to bring in experienced cover for a struggling team, facing up to the reality of a relegation battle, West Ham United saw the 28 year old as an ideal signing. Few people considered that a move to a team facing relegation would be more appealing than the prospect of one chasing honors. Neill surprised many when he turned down a move to Anfield , packed his bags and headed south to Upton Park.

Harsh words were thrown at the player from Liverpool who accused Neill of showing a lack of ambition when he signed for West Ham United for a lot more financially than Liverpool were prepared to offer and a greater chance of first team football. At 28 it was no doubt a difficult decision to make; often players in this age bracket will chase trophies saying they wanted to win things knowing their careers were approaching the end, others will chase the big pay day knowing that it may be their last chance of receiving such a lucrative deal.

Whether you brandish Neill a mercenary or not is down to you but consider what you may have done in his shoes and you cannot really blame the player. At the next World Cup he would have been 32 and even if Australia qualified he would not have been considered as much of an appealing addition to a squad as he did at 28. This was his last big pay day, failing the opportunity to move to the MLS in his thirties or head out to the Far East or Dubai for a big pay day when his career in England was finished.

The future will prove whether he has made the correct decision but it may prove that Neill showed great foresight now that West Ham United have deep pockets thanks to their rich Icelandic ownership . With big names arriving at Upton Park since then and more due to follow in the summer, West Ham United could be one of the teams to watch as an outsider heading to the upper echelons of the Premier Division.

Holidays: Out of the Empty Qatar

December 24, 2009 by admin

Whoever said “Life’s a beach” might have been talking about Qatar. The lone, level sands of this Gulf Emirate stretch from one coast to the other with little between but for the occasional decaying mud-built fort.

It’s hot here: the mean temperature between May and September is a toasty 40°. As a consequence there’s not much greenery about, although the name of the capital, Doha, means “big tree” in the local dialect. The big tree is long gone but there is no need for others in this gleaming metropolis to die of thirst: like Dubai Qatar has a liberal attitude towards alcohol consumption and practically all hotels have bars.

This liberal outlook is fostered by the cosmopolitan make-up of Doha’s population: most are expatriates working in the oil industry or associated businesses. They have plenty of money to spend and there is no dearth of options when it comes to spending it. City Centre Doha is the largest shopping mall in the Middle East. More typical of the region are the numerous souqs where visitors can hone their haggling skills. Everything from gold through to perfumes and textiles can be acquired here as well electrical goods and even camping equipment.

Camping equipment might be appropriate for any itinerary that sees the travellers venture out of the city and into the interior of the country. Safari holidays that concentrate exclusively on the dunes and isolated lagoons are quite unusual but there are plenty of providers of four wheel drive, one-day excursions. The symbol of Qatar is the oryx, an elegant antelope whose silhouette gave birth to the myth of the unicorn. Anyone keeping their eyes peeled out in the wastes has a fair chance of seeing one.

Holidays with a focus on water are a good way of cooling off in a desert country. Qatar has seeded two artificial reefs for scuba diving and there are many operators offering fishing trips or sightseeing cruises too.

The best driving roads in the world

December 22, 2009 by admin

We were in the United Arab Emirates doing an off road racing show for Jeep. On a day off, we all headed for our adventure of choice. The Americans went deep sea fishing, while a trio of us with a bit more of an international outlook headed for the border with Oman, and the Hatta mountains. In these mountains, in a wild desert, lie two deep, cool, pristine pools, a true oasis. Naturally, they are called the Hatta pools.

We headed out of Dubai in a Land Rover Discovery. While these things have traditionally had less than user-friendly dashboards and spotty reliability, off road they are superb. They continue the tradition of the original Land Rover, nicknamed the Drover by the many farmers, ranchers and shepherds around the world who use them as the ultimate utility vehicle. A few years ago my girlfriend and I were hiking along a rocky outcrop in Wales, and heard engine noises. Up a twisted track crawled an old blue Land Rover, a shepherd checking on his flock.

The key here is crawling. Unlike the Hollywood or advertising industry version, proper off-roading calls for the lowest possible speed and also for a very supple suspension, with lots of wheel travel. This certainly flies in the face of North American tradition. My Ford F250 is sprung so stiffly jumping on the rear bumper barely makes it quiver. Unloaded, in two-wheel drive, it can get stuck on the most mild of snow-covered hills. Throw a cord of firewood in back and it becomes a traction monster, but otherwise it, and all but a few of the latest generation of pickups, are crude world war two designs that have gone for a facelift and some fancy clothes.

Off-road racing pickups, such as those that compete in the Baja 1000 or the Paris-Dakar raid, are generally built on a tube frame racing chassis, with long, soft springs which permit huge suspension travel. That is why they land gently after being airborne, instead of bending like a paper clip, which is what would happen to a stock ladder frame pickup.

Another point about softer springs. In a wet weather race, we always soften the springs and anti-roll bars. More suspension movement makes for much better handling in rain or on snow or ice. You want body roll, well controlled, so load is progressively transferred to the outside tires, which will be doing most of the work. In these circumstances, overly stiff springing makes a vehicle feel like a go-kart on steroids with the steering disconnected.
