Is Hotel The Rich Cousin Of Motel?

December 21, 2009 by admin

No one can claim he/she has not stayed in a hotel at least once in life. For those traveling for business, pleasure or for that matter, any other reason, hotels have come to become home away from their homes. Why travelers prefer hotels over motels when all they provide are same? Well, motels by far differ from hotels in their functionality, additional services, and construction. Motels have their room doors opening to exteriors to their driveway while hotel rooms open to interiors.

Apart from other regular guest services that hotels provide, you can also plan your business meetings, conferences or even large conventions in some hotels, which is a far cry at motels. What is more, even the locations of hotels are also conveniently located unlike the traditional motels, which invariably cater to highway travelers who just stay by night.

The word hotel has originated from French, which referred to townhouse before being known universally as it is today.

What Is Star Classification of Hotels

The star classification of hotels indicates the type and quality of service available at any hotel. The enormous explosion of tourism in the last century has necessitated star classification for the benefit of discerning tourist public.

International and national tourism agencies along with respective governments rate and classify hotels on a scale of one to five stars. However, if you thought there is a standards body which classifies all the hotels of this world, here, you are in for a surprise. The attempts by interested industry captains have failed thus far and the standardization has been elusive till date.

What Do Star Ratings Mean

Briefly the ratings mean this:

One star: An inexpensive, low budget hotel which may not have maid or room service. Quite affordable by middle class.

Two star: Marginally expensive and may have once a day maid service.

Three star: A budget hotel which boasts of maid and room service, internet and health club service in addition to having a swimming pool.

Four star: Expensive hotels by even middle class travelers; offers many luxury services in addition to afore mentioned services.

Five star: Stands testimony to final word in luxury and are very expensive anywhere in the world. They offer countless innovative extras. Some of them boast of private airports and golf courses.

If you thought this was all, sample this. There are some unusual hotels too.

· Treehouse hotels

· Underwater hotels

· Cave hotels

· Ice hotels etc

Hotels are not far behind in records making. For example: Burj-al-Arab, Dubai, is the tallest hotel at 321 meters and the honors for being largest hotel goes to Ambassador City Jomtien with 5100 rooms at Pattaya Thailand.

Andy Murray’s March Into History

Andy Murray has had a magical start to the 2009 season and if he can continue the form that witnessed him smashing a number of local and international records in 2008, there is little doubt the controversial Scot will mount a grand slam podium any day now to claim the highest honour in professional tennis.

Bookmakers offering odds on Murray’s grand slam hopes

Such is the excitement of a prospective grand slam title for the long-suffering British fans, top flight sports bookmakers are offering odds on the possibility of Murray’s last lurch to unequivocal greatness!

The young man, who has the propensity of rubbing fans and foes up the wrong way, has learnt an awful lot about his chosen career in the past 12 months but it is arguably his dedication to the game that is so very impressive.

Over the years Murray’s commitment to pro tennis has been questioned with his antics on and off the courts not always endearing him to the media, or for that matter, the legions of starved British tennis fans that effectively pay him his salary.

Added commitment has him in the running for the big time

All this changed, however, at the end of the 2007 season when he recruited the aid of fitness experts and changed his coach to Miles Maclagan. The pre-season prep paid off big time with Murray claiming his 4th career title at Qatar.

He stumbled at the Australian Open, crashing out in the first round to the man who nearly caused one of the biggest upsets in grand slam history, Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

From then on in, though, Andy Murray grabbed the headlines for all the right reasons. Although he failed to claim the title in Dubai, he did raise eyebrows by beating the great Roger Federer and at his home grand slam at the All England Club, he rose to the occasion, reaching his first major quarter finals, losing out to awesome talent of ‘Raffa’ Nadal.

First Brit to reach a grand slam final since ‘77

Murray broke his Masters Series’ duck in Toronto, claiming another impressive scalp, that of the world number three, Novak Djokovic and then he loped into the annals of British tennis history by becoming the first Brit since Greg Rusedski, in 1977, to reach a grand slam final. Although he lost to Federer at Flushing Meadows, some citing his ongoing stamina problem, he did prove to himself, and the world, what he was capable of.

He had the better of Federer again in Madrid and went on to win back-to-back Masters Series titles, a feat not often emulated in professional tennis. In Russia, he again set the records tumbling by becoming the first Brit, since Mark Cox in 1975, to win consecutive titles when he claimed the St Petersburg Open for the second year in a row.

Clean sweep in Abu Dhabi – Blake, Federer and Nadal crushed

Murray’s start to the 2009 has been a fairytale, with him crushing top ranked players with impunity. In Abu Dhabi, in an exhibition match, he notched up wins against James Blake, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and in his current campaign in Doha, as defending champion, he is playing well within himself and has the look of a true champion!

If Murray can get his second serve working well and can sort out his unenviable break point conversion record, there is absolutely no doubt he will win at the highest level any day now!

Reflections on rugby fans

December 18, 2009 by admin

Let’s start with rugby: the game they play in heaven. Descended from the Gods, incarnated by a rebellious English schoolboy, reserved for gentlemen’ with fine morals and now, tragically, increasingly frequented by know-nothing, jeans-and-thong-wearing socialites with un-detachable mobile phones. No longer is rugby the enclave of well-heeled and meticulously schooled ruck and maul officiandos. Rather, its heightened popularity has opened the door to hordes of those who go to the rugby just to say they were there’. The kind of supporters’ who take more enjoyment from running into Terrence from Sales than seeing Lote run the length of the pitch.

Am I being too harsh? Isn’t progress and recognition good for the game? Shouldn’t everyone be able to enjoy our sporting traditions? Maybe. Probably. Certainly, I’m getting old.

Still, I propose the findings of my recent case study: At the Super 14 Australian match-of-matches earlier this year (Waratahs vs. Brumbies for those with torn jeans!), when hostility and one-eyed support should have been flowing like beer from a tap, I found myself surrounded by three shouting phone bearers, two incontinent light beer drinkers, a family of hungry (2 kiosk trips), thirsty (3 trips to the bar) and programme-less (yet another voyage) patrons and a very distracting aisle butterfly sporting an easily-visible pink g-string.

Of the phone bearers, one spent the entire first half extolling his Cassanova-esque exploits to his mate in Dubai, another divided her time between phone-dumping her current boyfriend and waving her location to a new beau across the stadium. The third spent all the second half alternately standing, waving or yelling into his handset “Can you see me now? How bout now!?”

It was annoying, infuriating and, well, inconceivable for someone who pays to watch the game, not play hide-and-seek in a crowd of 35,000. Call me old-style, but wasn’t the pub invented for the express purpose of post-match catch-ups? Break-ups? Talk-ups? And, really, who honestly gives two hoots if your fluffy pink shirt and silly haircut are viewed by some office Neville on the other side of the ground?

Sadly, this phenomena is not limited to rugby. Cricket: outside of the members stand who can remember a single ball bowled? League: tell me going to the game isn’t about picking a fight? Soccer: ditto.

Dispairingly, the list goes on. At the tennis, it’s all eyes on Bec, not Lleyton; TV coverage of the AFL shows the antics of the coaches box roughly 71.2% of the time and then there’s the raceslet’s not even go there!

Instead, let’s go straight to the cause. Number one culprit: popularity. Somehow, somewhere sporting events started to be more about being seen, rather than seeing. About socialising more than spectating. Sport became a place to be’ rather than watch’.

And so now every man and his dog- like the game or not- gets to the ground, invading what used to be the sacred domain of binocular-bearers and leather-patch wearers. Which brings us to mobile phones, for which there is absolutely no place.

Short of your best friend having a coronary and not being able to hail a doctor in a sea of 30,000 spectators, I really can’t think of a need for mobiles at the footy, or the cricket or the Olympic Opening Ceremony. In fact, on the back of my case study and ground-breaking findings, I propose that anyone attempting to enter a stadium with a mobile phone be banned. For good.

That should clear things up a little, leaving me and about 100 fellow die-hards to bask in the glow of the bright lights. It’ll also make it easier for our friends to spot us on the telly!

Ideal vacation spots

If you’re visiting Dubai, don’t miss out on Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The Souk is a slice of old world Arabia blended to perfection with the pulse of the contemporary world in every way to create a vibe that wafts gently over everyone that passes through on a walk of discovery. The buildings are low with angular definition and painted a burnt brown that matches the sands of the desert. The ATM machine at the entrance to the Souk belies the bazaar like atmosphere immediately after it where the merchants ply their goods in open shops. A detour into any shop guarantees you a princely welcome comprised of avid geniality, a thousand watt smile and a price tag the GDP of Outer Mongolia on every thing you touch. That may be why the ATM machine is the first sight.

The shops spread out in several directions which in turn spill into cafes, juice bars, restaurants and pubs that seem out of sync with the Souk but Dubai is an eclectic mix of cultures and people and every aspect of this has been taken into consideration each step on the way to creating the Souk. The cafes open onto paved walkways where one can seat in the evenings to watch the traditional abras pass by and reminiscence of good things past and yet to come.

When the day ends and the merchants shut up their shops with the thousand watt smile still in place and pockets bulging, you can cross over to the right wing of the Souk where Trilogy the biggest nightclub in Dubai slowly comes to life as the sun sets.

Clubbing ends at three in the morning and when you’re trudging out of the club, happily drunk and certifiably deaf, you can pause to take a look at the night time view of the Souk over the skyline. For a moment, maybe, just maybe, you can almost feel yourself back in Arabian times, a part of the old world.

Hong Kong Thoroughbred Horse Racing

December 17, 2009 by admin

Thoroughbred horse racing in Hong Kong is a pivotal part not only of many lives but it is vital to the economy, contributing massive taxes and being the major supporter of most charities. Thoroughbred racing in Hong Kong is therefore naturally followed far more passionately than anywhere else in the world.

Hong Kong has two race courses, the main one situated at Shatin is a first class track with facilities equal to any track in the world. A big track with both turf and dirt surfaces and a straight 1200m, statistics show that horses get every chance to win from whatever draw.

However Happy Valley where the lesser grade Wednesday night races are held has to be the most spectacular race track in existence. To understand the full impact of this place you need to make the effort to go and experience it.

Situated on the island amidst major housing and retail complexes, Happy Valley is surrounded by the lights of multi level apartment blocks. It is a relatively small track which affords spectators a close up view of the races giving an I can not believe this place feel to visitors.

Tourists can also visit the Hong Kong Racing Museum at Happy Valley, which provides a fascinating historical insight into how the sport has evolved since its mid-19th century beginnings.

Over the last 15 years or so the quality of Hong Kong thoroughbred racing has developed substantially and nowadays it is difficult to imagine a more cosmopolitan racing circuit than can be experienced here. The prize money is so substantial that the champion riders and trainers from France, England, Australia and South Africa all eagerly vie for the few invitations to ride in Hong Kong. In fact the roster of riders in Hong Kong reads like an Academy Award nomination list for the best jockeys in the world.

Fourteen Group 1 races are run in Hong Kong each season, with the Hong Kong International Race day in December being the richest and most important meeting of the year. The Hong Kong International Races are now generally recognized to be the most international event in the racing world and the main meeting point for northern and southern hemisphere thoroughbreds.

Today the international event has been transformed into a set of four races: the Hong Kong International Sprint over 1200m, the Hong Kong Mile over 1600m, the Hong Kong Cup over 2000m and the Hong Kong Vase over 2400m.

The Champions Mile is on April 29, run at 1600 meters over the Shatin turf course and is already part of an international racing series, the Asian Mile Challenge, which comprises the Futurity in Australia, the Dubai Duty Free, the Champions Mile, and the Yasuda Kinen in Japan, all Group 1 races.

The standard of local thoroughbreds has also risen dramatically as can be seen by the number of hotly contested international races now taken out by locals even in the presence of top echelon European, American, Japanese and Australian thoroughbreds.

With a population of around 1,100 thoroughbreds from around the globe, Hong Kong racing works under an easy to understand handicap system, where gallopers gain or lose rating points from their performance on the racecourse, resulting in close and competitive racing.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a monopoly on racing and betting in the territory, a holdover from colonial days, and the HKJC is the territories largest taxpayer and charity. Massive betting pools are involved and Hong Kong racing officials understand that it is imperative to share every piece of information there is with the betting public.

The racing club website has easily the best information I have ever seen with full videos and extensive reporting of every race held. Trackwork data, performance history, weights carried, times, everything is easily found and exhaustively detailed.

To summarise, for any thoroughbred racing enthusiast Hong Kong racing is an absolute must see experience. The city is situated on one of the most spectacular harbors imaginable, hotels are plentiful and first class and the shopping and gastronomic delights are legendary.

The Lords of Gas on YouTube

The Lords of Gas on YouTube

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bUm9pzhpLGA

Interview and introduction to the making of ‘The Lords of Gas’.

Anouska Bolton Lee, Jack Lomax and Tim Burke with Andy Isaac, Director of The Notting Hill Film Festival and The British Film Party.

NF: There has been a huge increase in user generated film material and reality footage with the emergence of You Tube and Myspace does ‘The Lords of Gas’ somehow mirror this phenomenon.

TB: That absolutely right Andy, we try to pay homage to this new dawn of film making, we now live in an era where we have seen stars rise from this new medium. I mean take the Star Wars Kid for example; he has been watched more than any film star in history. We make reference to this in the movie, as we try to portray that anyone with a video camera can now make, in the words of Borat, ‘Great Success’. I mean look at; ’Borat’ this was a huge commercial success playing on the lives of real people. There is definitely a thirst for this type of material; people love reality TV so why not make a reality feature film. People love the idea that they too can now go out, create some film clips, which could be viewed by millions. It gives back the power of entertainment to the people watching it. We have also secured rights to screen a montage of clips from producers uploading to YouTube.

NF: What gave you the idea?

JL: We knew a life existed where each night you could drink free cocktails and mince with the high society, it was just thinking of the way to do it and finding out where to go. We had originally been given access to the industry PR diary via an online event’s website. We now had a list of high profile events, film premieres and after show parties in the showbiz calendar to infiltrate. Now it was simply, or not so simply, a matter of sitting around a table and coming up with a number of blag! Techniques we could use to get around the security guarding these places. We went around creating a Blagger’s lifestyle guide and instruction manual of tried and tested blag techniques…some failed some succeeded…we still run at about a 93% success rate. And so it became a lifestyle…which we started to document.

NH: You have managed to create the best film cast and most number of cameos of any film in history, was it easy getting all these stars as cameos.

ABL: Well it’s amazing really, everyone we met has treated us very well. We aren’t there to slag anyone off but we wanted to show what these celebrities were really like, as people, away from formal TV interviews and managed media conversations. They warmed to us because we weren’t their usual media questions, we were always ourselves asking random questions that they enjoyed talking about; like how best to sneak into parties and what they themselves have blagged before.

NF: Why did you decide to target celebrities?

TB: Good question. Target is the right word. First and foremost a lot of the time; to get into these places we did it through use of having the camera and microphone on display as you approach the door or vip room being guarded. It is amazing the access we have been given by just having a camera in hand and saying we are from a fake television programme. From filming these mind control techniques it was just a natural progression to target celebrities as it provided us with another line of security, clipboard nazis and PR shadows to engage our new found skills upon. Afterall, we all know the power of ‘celebrity’ we do unfortunately live in a celebrity obsessed society, like it or not ‘celebrity sells’ and to make our film bankable and sellable, we needed A-list names. We have probably assembled the best ever movie cast on a budget of just under half a million. But, the point of the film is that we are trying to show that anyone can enjoy the lifestyle of the rich and famous for nothing!

JL: There is also alot of non celebrity stuff like when we go ‘Ghost-Busting’ and make the national papers in Holland by pretending to find a ghost in a Dutch Castle or infiltrating the weird world of Live Action Role-play or sneaking into the erotic fetish scene. We wanted to shoot as much of the film in different locations around the world, which was mostly non celeb blags like the scenes in Miami, Tel Aviv and New York!

NF: The film is a double feature thriller and split into two parts. Why did you choose to do this and how does it follow on from your cult MTV series?

ABL: We wanted to show our side of the MTV series, the more gritty and edgy side. The MTV show was brilliantly made in post but we wanted to tell the story of our life’s during this time, an unpolished real take on how we went about infiltrating these showbiz parties. After all, it was an amazing opportunity that most people would never experience. When the idea came about to make, ‘The Lords of Gas’, this was in May 2007, we must have had over 200 hours of footage from the MTV series shot in 2004, but we now needed to film ourselves making the film a reality. So we went about filming conversations with sales and distribution agents, doing the editing competition, talking to studios. Like ‘Borat’ and most successful films we wanted to keep the film short at 1hr 24mins, we had so much material though and including the present day footage it just made sense to split the film into two. The first showing making MTV Blag! in 2004 and the second, present day, making the film a reality at Sundance and Cannes.
NF: The tools you are using to promote; ‘The Lords of Gas : Part I’ and the online presences and social networking communities you are building on You Tube, Myspace and Facebook will undoubtedly be very effective for marketing the film. Do you feel traditional advertising is under threat.

TB: No. But, we first saw the power of the internet for film distribution, first come into play with; ’The Blair Witch Project’. It has now become an essential part of life so why not use it as a means and route to market? It’s more organic, interactive and less static than traditional print and ambient media. Studios take a huge cut of a film’s profits as millions is spent with media buying and outdoor advertising. With the rise of Google Video and You Tube, Facebook/Myspace; with a successful viral campaign and online strategy you are given direct access to the same numbers of people traditional advertising focuses on without paying huge marketing budgets.
Not only that but it’s interactive for the viewer, people can become a member of; ‘The Lords of Gas’ on Facebook our will be able to join the channel on You Tube or Myspace and share their own blag stories or learn more techniques. We are confident with our pending partnerships with these sites that we can create a massive number of trailer views and visitors that would justify any studio marketing spend on a blockbuster using traditional outdoor media.
We decided if we can create all this for free it would give us some weight when selling the film to distribution agents and ofcourse, create a great buzz about the movie. Having run my own company in this media for several years, I have a personal affinity to the creativeness and intelligence the internet can bring, so it was a nature choice for us to make.

NH: At present you have Warner Brothers and Universal Pictures interested in the first film, have you had anymore thought about who you will partner with?

TB: Both, companies have asked us to contact them on completing the film. However, at present we are focusing on creating as much of an industry buzz as possible and waiting to see what deals will come from our WRAP party and screening in Cannes this summer, on a 40m boat. Paul Oakenfold, who appears in the second film, has confirmed to play. Working with Tony Hickcok (Director: Hell Raiser III) for; ‘The Lords of Gas: Part II’ has also opened many potential deals within the international DVD distribution market. After an interview with Morgan Spurlock at Sundance, we hope to get Cinetic as our sales agent. We are very impressed with their track record.

NH: You use a lot of high impact motion image editing, time-lapse, cityscapes and overhead stock. As a result the film is fast paced and plays like an action thriller in places. Could you shed some light on this?

JL: ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ has just come out and we were very impressed by the pace and energy in the film. Basically, we just wanted to see if we could copy it. Our narrative and plot is also based around espionage, infiltration, undercover surveillance and covert intelligence so why not help the pace of the film by adding those styles of motion capture, titles and editing. The other reason is that the stock footage libraries we used gave us access to these brilliant clips, which helps the film make an impact.

NH: There are many hidden secrets in the film in which you can lookout for; can you discuss this in more detail?

TB: Well, we wanted to add a twist at the end, which I think we achieve quite nicely. It’s a blag on the viewer which being the very subject matter of the film, we thought would be quite fun. We have also hidden some things within certain scenes and these will be linked back to the website and online marketing, like live phone numbers that work in the real world as well as the film. We can’t really tell you much about this at present but we like the idea of keeping the viewer on their toes. The films also have a much deeper subject matter than just sneaking into parties…we raise some serious points about life and existence; which we also thought was important for the youth generation, ‘The Lords of Gas’ is aimed at…..

Where Jackass, Dirty Sanchez and MTV’s Bam say;
‘DONT TRY This At Home”.

The Lords of Gas’, say; ‘DO TRY this at Home.”

The Bigger Picture Film’s, ‘The Lords of Gas’ film trilogy begins with the film team blagging their way into the world famous Monaco Gran Prix in 2004. The film sees the covert film squad travel the globe trying our their Array of covert Blag! techniques filming in locations such as The Cannes Film Festival, Ghostbusting in Doorwerth Castle, Holland; an Array of London Film Premieres including: The Casino Royal – After Show Party; Las Vegas Porn Conference; James Bond Miami Model Castings and Gun Range, Jesus in the Holyland, Israel, The Pantomime Cow blag! and film financing with Laughing Gas Balloon stands at ‘Bestival’. The Lords of Gas
