Golfers spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday destinations
One of the many beautiful things about golf is that the game is now truly global. Long gone are the days of European and North American domination as developers on every continent are now involved in building larger and more impressive courses, attracting golfers from all corners of the world in the process.
Even countries that at face value simply don’t have the climate nor terrain for golf are getting in on the act. The Middle Eastern Emirate of Dubai is now a well established destination for golfers seeking a new challenge. Over the past decade lush championship-standard golf courses designed by some of the world’s leading course architects and players have been developed in the Emirate, attached to some of the most luxurious nineteenth holes in the world.
For example, The Montgomerie, a fine collaboration between top British golfer Colin Montgomerie and world-famous course architect Desmond Muirhead, is one of Dubai’s leading courses but is by no means the only one. If you are a golfer then you are literally spoilt for choice and if you fancy cooling off a bit, as well as the Persian Gulf there’s always the huge indoor Ski World, which offers snowboarding and skiing on a variety of runs.
Alternatively North America, the home of the USPGA tour boasts a plethora of finely manicured courses equipped with many a tricky water hazard in some of the country’s top locations such as Florida, Arizona, California, and North Carolina. In addition to top quality golf, those States also offer other great leisure options such as exciting theme parks, guaranteed to keep non-golfers occupied while the handicappers are busy on the course. And, of course the climate is pretty outstanding too!
Speaking of pleasant climates the Caribbean also offers some challenging courses especially on the island of Barbados, and a bit farther out in the Atlantic the sophisticated, affluent community of Bermuda is also a golfing holiday nirvana for visitors. Other exclusive and exotic locations such as Mauritius in the Indian Ocean also offer golf courses that are fit for a professional and of course, the views are absolutely stunning.
Getting away on golfing holidays is easy too; carrying equipment is now a breeze with the world’s top airlines. Providing your golf clubs are stored in recognised golf cases most major airlines will transport them and other kit such as balls and shoes for a low fixed fee or even free, depending upon the carrier.
But you don’t have to be a scratch golfer to enjoy golfing holidays. Many courses provide lessons and welcome beginners with open arms, so even mixed ability groups will have no problem enjoying their time away as each will be able to concentrate on their own game.

With over 5.8 million visitors in 2005 and occupancy rate in excess of 83% Dubai is fast becoming one of the world’s premier tourist destinations in the world with tourism business reaching unprecedented levels.
Dubai is a cosmopolitan city with a population over 1 million that offers a wonderful taste of Arabia, seamlessly combining some of the world’s most exciting tourists developments in a distinctive blend of modern city and desert. Where else can you spend a vacation that combines sand dunes and Middle East culture with stunning high rise hotels overlooking pristine beaches and the warm turquoise waters of the Persian Gulf?
Dubai is also a shopper’s paradise. The tiny emirate is a duty-free zone and during its Shopping Festival, two million visitors arrive looking for discounts on gold, electronics, clothing, and Persian carpets.
Dubai has a subtropical arid climate and the weather is sunny pretty much all the year round… Dubai has experienced a total of 4 days of rain in 2005!
Given all the above reasons and keeping aside many others, is clear that the travel industry hence the local accommodation providers are riding the biggest wave of their life in fact in many cases the request for holiday accommodation as taken over the supply and it’s not breaking news for frequent travelers to hear that the hotels are fully booked and capable of offering only the most expensive suites (whatever left available).
There is a wide choice of accommodation available in Dubai ranging from hotels, hotel apartments and private villas or apartments for more exclusive retreats.
Renting an apartment might be a cheaper option then staying in a hotel especially if you intend staying in Dubai for longer then the usual package holiday or if you are a large group or simply wish to have greater flexibility and privacy, this latest option being the most sought after in recent days.
One of the most popular areas of Dubai is the Dubai Marina which creates an awe-inspiring city-within-a city that delights residents with its cosmopolitan, free-spirited atmosphere and unique, invigorating lifestyle.
It is a urban center on the water, comparable to the most exclusive waterfront developments in the world’s leading cities. Dubai Marina is the place where people meet, laugh, live and enjoy life to the full, always alive, with the glittering Marina at its heart.
Booking a Hotel in Dubai Marina is out of reach for many travelers who rather spend their budget on shopping and dining, for this reason renting a self-catering apartment in the Dubai Marina itself or a self-catering villa on the world famous Palm Island can be a much cheaper option, more affordable, comfortable and also more exciting….
There are many villas and apartments available for short term rental on self-catering basis and can cater from a minimum of 1 guest to as much as 15 guests according to the number of bedrooms available.
When planning to book a holiday apartment or villa in Dubai on self-catering basis it is necessary to carefully select the right real estate agent to deal with.
The most recommended would certainly be those actually based in Dubai that can guarantee you full assistance on a 24 hrs basis.
It’s really the quality that matters when you choose your holiday home in Dubai, yes you could be spending some extra bucks but in the end it will pay off.
Some properties are equipped with every amenity, from the bread toaster to the kettle, from the coffee machine to the microwave and also include a twice weekly house keeping service, fresh towels, fresh bed sheets, miniature shampoo and shower gel etc. some other properties that come across as a good bargain could end up being a bad surprise to say the least and you might experience issues such as faulty air conditioning, lack of cutlery items or crockery or cooking pans or lack of water pressure, poor hygiene and the list can go on and on to a point where your vacation could get badly compromised.
Professional agencies maintain and check on the properties on regular basis in addition to supply amenities and accessories to a level that can meet and in some cases go beyond the standard of a 5 stars hotel.
When booking a self catering apartment or villa there are few questions that you might want to ask such as:
How far and where is the nearest hospital? Does the property have a telephone line to make outgoing calls in case of emergency? Will you be awaited at your arrival in the early ours of the morning and will you be escorted and checked in your apartment by professional and English speaking staff? Will you find first hand groceries in the fridge at your arrival? How far is the closest supermarket? How far is the closest pharmacy? How far is the closest restaurant or coffee shop? Are the bills included in the rent? Is there a house keeping service provided? Is there a maintenance number that you could call in case it was required? Will you be able to receive international calls from your loved ones? How far is the beach? How far is the closest mall? Is the area fully developed or is it still under construction? How noisy or quite is it and do the windows have double glazing to serve this purpose? Are taxis easily available? Etc etc….
In the end it all comes to experience and professionalism…
There are many companies over the internet offering holiday villas around the world which is a great advantage as it keeps the competition alive and the rates affordable however be always careful and do your homework before making your final choice, at the end of the day it’s your holiday on the line.

Relive the Legacy With the New Queen Elizabeth

By Roy Witman
In the 1930s, Cunard Line (then White Star Line) donned the largest passenger ship ever built as the RMS Queen Elizabeth. Honoring the Queen Consort at the time, Cunard took great pride in the Queen Elizabeth who later was the namesake of the Queen Mother. However, history stepped in before the Queen Elizabeth could make her maiden voyage.
Due to turmoil at sea, it was decided the newly built Queen Elizabeth should be moved to Southampton. It came as a shock to Captain Townley when his sealed orders revealed he would be sailing the new queen to a port in New York because Southampton had recently been bombed by the Luftwaffe.
Finally, following the end of the war, Queen Elizabeth was able to fulfill her service as a passenger cruise ship. She did so until 1968 when she was sold to a group of Philadelphia businessmen who intended to operate the ship as a hotel and tourist attraction. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, the ship ended up being sold to a shipyard in Hong Kong. She met a most unbecoming fate as she burned and sank in a Hong Kong harbor in 1972.
The Queen Elizabeth 2
In 1967, the Queen herself launched the second ship bearing the name Elizabeth. Lovingly referred to as QE2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 became Cunard Line’s longest-serving flagship. After 40 years of service, QE2 has now been sold to a company in Dubai near Saudi Arabia who has the same intentions as those who bought the original Queen Elizabeth. QE2 will now call the Persian Gulf home.
The New Queen Elizabeth Set to Launch 2010
Cunard Line announced recently that they have secured plans for a new 92,000-ton liner to reclaim the name Queen Elizabeth. Carrying 2,092 passengers and costing in excess of $700 million, this will be the second largest Cunard ship the company has ever built.
According to Chris Marlow, president of Cunard Line, “The decision to order another ship for Cunard Line has been taken as a result of the strong booking response to the new Queen Victoria, and we are extremely pleased that Cunard will once again become a three-ship fleet so soon after the departure of the much-celebrated Queen Elizabeth 2 in November next year. Furthermore, we are delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has given her blessing to our calling this new Cunarder ‘Queen Elizabeth’, after our first vessel of that name.”
As is with all Cunard vessels, the new Queen Elizabeth’s homeport will be Southampton.
While little is known with regard to the precise specifications and amenities of Queen Elizabeth, if she is built in typical Cunard style, she’ll surely have every conceivable, modern luxury that discerning passengers expect. With white glove service reminiscent of the grand days of ocean travel, it will be exciting to see what unfolds for the new Queen Elizabeth as she looks to fill the shoes of some mighty predecessors.

Dubai is one of the most popular tourist spots in the world. Situated on the Persian Gulf and bordering Sharjah to the north-east and Abu Dhabi to the south-west, Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which in turn is located on the Arabian Peninsula.
Located along a coastal strip and bordered by deserts, Dubai, otherwise called Dubai City, is the major as well as the capital city of the emirate of Dubai. In terms of area, Dubai is the second largest emirate, after Abu Dhabi, and population wise, Dubai is the largest of all emirates.
Once a typical desert destination, Dubai has now been transformed into an international level city, boasting of excellent infrastructure facilities, superb tourists’ amenities, and above all, liberal laws and regulations. In addition, due to its strategic location which is just five hours fly from Europe and three hours fly from many of the Middle East countries and destinations such as India, Dubai attracts people from across the world. Further, the destination boasts of excellent accommodation and dining facilities, shopping options, sporting events, and incredible choices to indulge in an array of activities.
From archeological sites and beaches to museums, gardens, and amusement parks, Dubai comes with an array of attractions. For those who want to indulge in a number of recreational as well as water sport activities, then Dubai’s beaches provide great opportunities. Beaches in Dubai are categorized into free public beaches and paid beach clubs. Khor Al-Mamzar, Kite Beach, Russian beach, and Umm Suqeim, are popular among the free public beaches in the area.
Most popular among the paid options in Dubai are Jumeirah Beach Park, Royal Mirage, and the Al Mamzar Beach Park. All of these options are attached with excellent facilities such as clean sea water and white sand, swimming pools, picnic areas, picnic tables and barbeques, and sheltered public beach. If you are a history buff, then the destination has some superb options to amuse you in the form of Jumeirah, Al Sufooh, and Al Ghusals, all of which have more than 2000 years old graveyards. Additionally, the archeological site in Jumeirah is home to a number of stone walls, ancient dwellings, huge stone house, and an old souk.
A trip to Dubai would not be complete without taking a tour to many of the interesting museums in the destination. For instance, the Dubai Museum, housed within the Al Fahidi Fort, has on display an array of art and artifacts that date back to 6th century BC. There are also artifacts that even date back to 3rd century BC. Equally worth mentioning is the art galleries in the region, such as, Majlis Art Gallery near the picturesque Bastakia Quarter, Creations Art Gallery at the Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai International Art Center and Creative Art Center at the Jumeirah/Umm Sequim, Al Abbar Art gallery and Bagash Art Gallery in Bur Dubai, and the Hamarain Center in Deira.
If you are vacationing with your family and kids, then you should not miss to take a tour to some of the best amusement parks in the destination, such as, the Wild Wadi Water Park and Dubai Snow Park. All these serve as an excellent base for a perfect family vacation. Dubai’s serene parks and gardens are also a best option for a perfect family vacation. Just few among many of the parks and gardens in the city are Creekside Park, Mushrif Park, ZA’Abeel Park, and Safa Park.
Other not to miss attractions in Dubai are Jumeirah Mosque, noted for its stupendous Islamic architecture; Palm – the world’s largest man made island; Burj Dubai – the world’s tallest building; Dubai Zoo, which is home to some rare species of animals such as Arabian Wolf; Bastakiya, dotted with a number of traditional courtyard-type houses; and the Heritage Village, where you can see weavers and potters engaged in their crafts.
Apart from these attractions, people touring the place can engage in a number of activities. For instance, if you are a golf enthusiast, then Dubai presents a range of golf courses of international standards, such as, Majilis Course, Wadi Course, and the Al Awir course.
Similarly, if you are looking for a unique experience, then take a desert safari tour, for which you can make use of services of tour operators. Above all, don’t leave the destination without having some shopping. With a number of gold souk and options for buying items such as electronic, textile, and carpet items, Dubai is truly a shoppers’ paradise.
Experience Stunning Hotel Views Across the World
Once you’ve decided where you’re taking your holiday this year, choosing the hotel at which you want to stay can prove difficult. One member of your holiday party might want to stay in a hotel that’s located near the destination’s best bars and nightclubs, while another might have their hearts desire set on a quiet hotel by the beach. However, there’s one thing you’re all likely to agree on – that a great hotel room must have a spectacular view, whatever its location.
If stunning hotel views is what you’re after, visit Canada and consider the many hotels overlooking the breathtaking Niagara Falls. Naturally, a ‘Falls-view’ room will be more expensive than one overlooking the featureless downtown area. Sometimes the ‘view premium’ is as much as double, but if you are travelling all that way to see one of the world’s natural wonders, isn’t it worth it? Another fine example of the premium charge principle is in New York. Hotels there can safely charge more for a room with a view of the impressive Manhattan skyline than of the hotel dustbins. But then again, if you are flying all the way to New York, wouldn’t you want to see the unforgettable skyline rather than the back of the hotel?
And if you can’t benefit from natural views, rest assured it’s possible to build your own. Situated in the heart of the Arabian Desert, Dubai was a small city with big ideas ten years ago. Today, it is a major city with fabulous man-made off-shore islands and many superb hotels, turning it into one of the world’s biggest tourist and business hot-spots. As a result the City’s population has doubled in the last ten years, now numbering almost 1.2million, and property prices have gone through the roof.
The tallest free-standing hotel in the world is in Dubai: The Burj Al-Arab towers 1053 feet above the beautiful Persian Gulf, providing some of the most stunning hotel views anywhere in the world. Resembling the sail of an Arab Dhow and built on a man-made offshore island, this iconic structure dominates the Dubai skyline. It is one of the many luxury Dubai hotels that offer their guests the ultimate in opulence as well as stunning views of the Persian Gulf, the city of Dubai and the Arabian Desert.
One thing is certain with stunning hotel views: if you want to benefit from them you will have to pay a premium. But, another certainty is that it will be worth it!
Dubai Can Be Real Hot and Cool Both

There is more about Dubai you should know apart from its breathtaking skyline and the trade and commerce. Specially, if you were about to finalise a travel plan to one of its famous sea beaches. Things like the law, political system, weather and traffic congestion are some of the key areas that require attention. This article gives you an account of the same important issues before you embark on with your much awaited sojourns.
Historical Background
Dubai was one of the first emirates to join the UAE, a unified group of seven Muslim majority states, when the British forces finally left the Middle East in 1971. The area is surrounded by Saudi Arabia and Oman and the shorelines unite with the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. A Supreme Council of Rulers is the governing body of the United Arab Emirates. This council consists the seven ruling Emirs as its members, who in turn appoint the Prime Minister and the various Cabinet berths for the federal government. Note that while the Supreme Council of Rulers has overall control of the complete UAE, Dubai is famous for the high level of autonomy that it maintains as far as its local development issues are concerned.
Normal Weather
Since the Emirate of Dubai is in the Middle East, the climate is naturally sub-tropical and what you might expect from a desert in the neighborhood. This is good news in terms of clear skies all the year. There is very little rainfall and most of it takes place during the winter season. Temperatures follow an extreme trend with the daytime temperatures of summer touching the 48 degrees Celsius, and the winters the 10 degrees Celsius marks. January is the coldest with an average temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius, while the hottest month of July may report back an average of 41 degrees Celsius mark.
Population Estimates
The United Arab Emirates constitutes a population comprising that of the ethnic Arab community and a huge number of expatriates from India, Pakistan, East Asian countries, United States and the members of European Union. The region has been witnessing an insessent inflow of the expatriates due to the ongoing trade and commerce activities, and this can be visualized through its sharp rise in population since 1995. It shot up to 3.1 million in the year 2000 from the 2.4 million mark in 1995.
The population registered in the case of Dubai was 689,000 and 862,000 in the years 1995 and 2000 respectively. Most of these counted people reside within the urban areas of Dubai, while a tiny fraction prefers living on in the neighbouring countryside farms.
Language, Holidays, Local Time and Religion
Arabic is the official language of UAE, but also spoken are some other languages. English enjoys being the medium of communication in the majority of trade and commerce activities, while Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam and some other dialects are spoken by the expatriates from India and Pakistan.
Dubai’s standard time runs four hours ahead of GMT and keeps unchanged through out the twelve month period. It runs one and one and half hours behind the Pakistan and Indian standard times respectively.
Islam is the official religion of all Arabian countries including the UAE. Dubai is no exception either in this context. As a result, the Muslim holidays and festivities assume a very significant role in its normal life. These holidays may keep varying from one year to another as per the Islamic calender.
Visa Issues and Transportation
Visa rules can vary for the travellers from different nations. Citizens of the western block of nations may walk out of the airport with a visa on their arrival. Visitors from the rest of world are not allowed the same kind of luxury though. Those who may be looking forward to carrying on with their business activities will have to get somebody local sponsorship first.
Buses and taxis are available for the transportation within Dubai, but it may not prove sufficient to those who may have plans of going outside of the city area. Hiring private vehicles is a much preferred option for this reason these days. Roads in and outside of Dubai are advanced in nature, but the general traffic sense may not prove out to be that much appealing. Be wary of driving on Dubai’s roads, if you were not fully aware if its existing traffic hazards, like the disorderly driving on the roads within and the wandering camels off the city limits.
Dubai’s government has initiated some steps recently to improve upon its general traffic scenario. There are several projects planned to carry out this task, including a floating bridge over Dubai Creek, upgrading of the First Interchange with a three-tier interchange, the Dubai Outer Bypass Road and the Sufouh Roads Network etc.
UAE Property Guide, Part 7 Of 8 – Sharjah Property
Sharjah is the third largest emirate (sovereign state) of the United Arab Emirates (the UAE), and the only emirate to have coastline on both the east and west coasts of the UAE thanks to its enclaves which border the Gulf of Oman. The majority of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates are all surprisingly small with Sharjah having an area of just 2600 square kilometres, comprising 16 kilometres of shoreline along the Persian Gulf and extending 80 kilometres into the interior of the country. The emirate of Dubai and the emirate of Ajman both border Sharjah, and with the recent growth of these three emirates the urban areas have expanded to all but meet at the borders.
Sharjah maintains strict decency laws under which unmarried men and women are not allowed to mix, and enforces a conservative dress code for men and women. Sharjah is also the only emirate in the UAE in which the possession, consumption or sale of alcohol is banned.
Some emirates of the UAE have only recently started to allow foreign freehold ownership of property, before 2002 the only option available to foreign nationals was 99-year leasehold agreements. Sharjah has not passed any laws regarding freehold ownership by foreigners and the 99 year lease system is still the only option available to non UAE or GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) citizens who wish to purchase property in Sharjah.
Sharjah has commenced development of the Nujoom Islands which is to be the biggest tourism, residential and commercial project in Sharjah. The Nujoom Islands project will consist of 10 manmade islands, and three areas of mainland; the development will increase the coastline of Sharjah by 30 kilometres. The development is situated near the town of Hamriya 15 kilometres from Sharjah city. Sharjah also being the name of the major city in the emirate of Sharjah.
The project will be aesthetically pleasing with a ratio of 40% development and 60% landscaped roads, gardens, parks, and beaches. The ten islands will be connected to both the mainland and each other by a series of bridges, and will be separated by a series of water channels. The Nujoom Islands project will house over 40,000 residents and will provide many services and amenities such as schools, banks, mosques, restaurants and clubs. The development will also have several centres spread throughout, including a large commercial centre and nine smaller commercial centres, six centres for light industry and two entertainment centres.
Residential and tourist accommodation for the project will consist of four hotels, two resorts, 145 apartment buildings, 40 high rise towers (for commercial and residential uses) and 1,400 villas set in either park side or waterside locations. The Completion date for the Nujoom Islands is 2010.
Developers have also built and are constructing several towers in Sharjah City including the ABBCO tower, Sharjah Gate, and two towers being developed by Tiger Real Estate, the Al Sandos tower and the Al Taawun Tower. The Tiger Real Estate Towers are being sold on a 99 year leasehold basis with an option to transfer to freehold ownership when, or if, the law permits.
Beaches in Dubai Under Threat

Dubai has rapidly risen through the ranks to become one of the world’s top tourist destinations thanks to a number of diverse factors, not least of which includes a recent and sustained period of heavy investment in the construction of residential, holiday and commercial properties in the Emirate.
As well as the intensive building programme, Dubai has also invested heavily in ensuring that the infrastructure is in place to match their lofty construction ambitions. The government’s strategic approach ensures that they never take their eye off the ball and pay attention to every detail; nothing is overlooked and that includes the beaches.
Dubai’s beaches and parks offer a diverse range of recreational and leisure activities, and prove a big draw for the millions of tourists that visit every year. However, coastal erosion is a real problem in Dubai as the sea is eating away almost 50 metres of beach every two years, according to figures collected by engineers at the Coastal Management Section of Dubai Municipality. This has prompted the development of a new mission to protect the Persian Gulf shore and the subsequent buildings behind it by the specialist government department.
Five-tonne bags of sand have been strategically positioned 100 metres from the shore in a protective arc known as a groyne to prevent the destruction of the Umm Suqeim beach, which has many houses behind it under real threat from the coastal erosion. As well as the groynes, sand is being deposited by engineers as quickly as it is being washed away by the seas with over 500,000 cubic metres poured on existing beaches by the coastal management department.
The Dubai coastal zone stretches from the Abu Dhabi border in the south to the Emirate of Sharjah in the north, passing through the City of Dubai, and it is this entire stretch of approximately 70 kilometres that is under observation by the engineers. But, as they point out the erosion is nothing new, it has always affected the Dubai coast. However, due to the massive programme of construction that has seen many new properties being built close to the sea, it is now becoming a threat to those hotels, houses and holiday homes.
Indeed, another concern of the engineers is that the building of the mega projects off the coast of Dubai, such as The World, are actually increasing the effect of the onshore erosion. They are calling for any development, whether it is a one-off new luxury beach hotel in Dubai or a mega project built off-shore to be assessed for its likely impact on the region’s beaches. As they point out, the beaches are one of the major reasons why millions of tourists are flocking to the region in the first place, so they should ensure that further development does not affect them too adversely.
